Tansky Family Leadership

In 2007, the University of Pittsburgh named siblings, Pittsburgh natives, and Pitt alumni and University trustees Burt Tansky, former president and CEO of The Neiman Marcus Group, Inc., and Eva Tansky Blum, executive vice president and director of Community Affairs for PNC Bank, co-chairs of the Building Our Future Together fundraising campaign. The first-known brother and sister in the 220-year history of the University to serve concurrently as Pitt trustees, Eva and Burt also are the first-known brother and sister to be named cochairs of a higher-education fundraising campaign of the magnitude of Pitt's.

Among the many generous contributions Eva and Burt have made to the University was their gift to establish the Tansky Family Fund in the Department of Neurology, which supports the Department of Neurology and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.  In 2006, Burt and Eva, along with their late sister Shirley Gordon, made a gift to the University, which was recognized with the naming of the Tansky Family Lounge in the William Pitt Union in memory of their parents, Harry and Jeanette Tansky.  Their mother, Jeanette Neistein, had been one of the 97,000 schoolchildren to contribute a dime for the construction of the Cathedral of Learning.  The Tanskys taught their children to value education, hard work, and generosity.  Burt, who earned his bachelor’s degree in history in 1961, had to work a steady stream of jobs to afford to pay his tuition.  Eva, who received an undergraduate diploma in political science and a law degree from Pitt in 1973, was able to attend Pitt thanks to scholarships.
