Chartered in 1878, the School of Pharmacy is the oldest of the University of Pittsburgh's schools of the health sciences. Along with the five other schools of the health sciences, the School of Pharmacy is adjacent to and affiliated with the internationally renowned University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), which provides care through the region’s largest and finest network of tertiary, specialty, and community hospitals.

The University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy is on the forefront of educating pharmacy's future practitioners with its four-year PharmD program. Setting the School apart from others is a curriculum that:

  1. Integrates science and practice throughout the course of study;
  2. Emphasizes team building through collaborative learning;
  3. Leads the nation in its service learning program;
  4. Offers professionally and technologically advanced methods of instruction delivery.

The School of Pharmacy also enjoys a national reputation for the Clinical Pharmaceutical Scientist Program, an innovative PhD program that educates scientists to conduct translational and patient-oriented research.

Today, the School of Pharmacy is a leader in research, with endeavors ranging from research in molecular genetics to human clinical research and patient care outcomes. The School of Pharmacy is home to four world-class research centers:

  • The Center for Pharmacogenetics,
  • The Center for Education and Drug Abuse Research (CEDAR),
  • The Pharmacodynamic Research Center,
  • The Center for Pharmacoinformatics and Outcomes Research.

The School also houses the Cell Imaging Core of the Center for Reproductive Science, a Neuroendocrinology Research Consortium, as well as considerable chemistry expertise in the newly created Drug Discovery Institute of the University. Through its collaboration with UPMC, School of Pharmacy faculty members also lead the combined Pittsburgh Poison Center and Drug Information Center.

For over 125 years, the School of Pharmacy has been committed to improving health through excellence, innovation, and leadership in education, research, patient care, and service. Thanks to the support we receive from our friends and alumni, the School of Pharmacy will continue to advance its mission well into the future.

Donor Profile

William W. Goode, Sr. (PHARM ’28)

William W. Goode, Sr. (PHARM '28) was one of pharmacy's great African American pioneers in Pittsburgh during the 1930s, 40s and 50s. He owned and operated four pharmacies in the area, most notably Goode's Pharmacy in Pittsburgh's Hill District, during a time when segregation was the norm. Because young black pharmacists were not permitted to train in pharmacies owned by whites, there were very few opportunities available to encourage the development of young pharmacists.

Goode's Pharmacy provided an open door and the premiere training ground for young men and women who were on the threshold of their pharmacy careers. "My father felt that it was the community that had given him his livelihood," recalls his daughter, Sharon Goode Ryan. "Helping these young men and women to achieve their goals was his way of giving back."

Upon William's death in 1995 at the age of 88, his wife Sara Jane Goode established the William W. Goode, Sr. Endowed Scholarship Fund to honor her husband at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Pharmacy. Her wish was to continue his legacy of helping aspiring young pharmacists to achieve their goals.

Earlier this year, William's daughter Sharon and her husband Robert Ryan, a retired CFO of Medtronic, Inc., continued to expand her family's scholarship by making a generous gift to the scholarship fund. "My father would always tell us, if your name is on something, you have to be true to your name and stand for something."

Many people in the Hill District still remember William Goode's name as being synonymous with kindness and compassion. He was a lifelong member of the NAACP, a trustee of Ebenezer Baptist Church, and assisted in providing funding for land on which the Sickle Cell Society built its present building. His family remembers him as a loving husband and father with a steely work ethic and a penchant for wearing a white shirt and black tie for even the most casual occasions.

Sharon knows her father would be proud of their continued support of the William W. Goode, Sr. Endowed Scholarship Fund. "Education is very important to my husband Robert and me. We believe any student can achieve their goals with a good education. I'm hoping the students we help will go on to help other young African American students complete the pharmacy program."
