Donor Profile
Carl Paul Malmberg
Carl Paul Malmberg, the third son of Paul and Geraldine Malmberg, joined the Peace Corp after graduating from college. While in the Peace Corp, he taught school at St. Stephens High School in Mohale’s Hoek - a small city in Lesotho, South Africa. At the age of 26, Carl was killed in a bicycling accident. His family used the funds from his Estate to establish the Carl Paul Malmberg Memorial Scholarship in his memory.
“Carl’s interest in the Peace Corp was so outstanding we knew this was the most beneficial way to use the funds from his estate,” says Paul Malmberg, Carl’s father. “We want to help students who are less fortunate the same way Carl did and the University of Pittsburgh has studies that feature study abroad programs.”
The scholarship recipient should be a citizen of Lesotho, South Africa who would attend the University to study science and agriculture, conservation, water resource management, or other subjects related to the pressing problems of Lesotho and its citizens.
Geraldine Malmberg, Carl’s mother, a graduate of Pitt (MED ’69) says, “We maintain friendships with all of the recipients and are hosts to some during their stay here. We want to ensure they get the most out of their program.”
The Carl Paul Malmberg Memorial Scholarship benefits someone who has been teaching or plans to teach in Lesotho, or would be involved in other pursuits there that would contribute to improvements in life quality in the country.
